Build your own infrared cabin: the seated cabin

Build your own infrared cabin – tips for DIY enthusiasts, carpenters, and sauna manufacturers

Here you will find practical tips on how to proceed when planning your deep-heat seated cabin. A customized infrared cabin is relatively easy to build for skilled DIY enthusiasts – also see our information on materials and technology.
We are also happy to support you with the planning.
In our customer examples and on our social media accounts, you will also find great infrared cabins and combination saunas for inspiration.

Define the size for a seated infrared cabin

Rule of thumb: for 2 seats you need approx. 130 x 130 cm floor space; the depth should vary between 120 cm and 150 cm, while the width can also be up to 200 cm when using full-spectrum heaters.
Place one chair per seat about 20 cm in front of the wall. This ensures there is enough space behind you for the back heater and a backrest.
Make sure there is sufficient distance between the chairs. More freedom of movement is better than too little, but the distance to the front heater should not become too large.

In front of the body, a front heater should ideally be placed directly opposite. (Base area approx. 22 cm width × 10 cm depth).
To simulate the front heaters, you can use cardboard boxes or other narrow objects. You should have sufficient legroom to sit comfortably.

Now consider where the door is best positioned. To simulate the door swing radius, you can place a stick, strip, or similar object on the floor. A glass door should be approx. 60–70 cm wide.

If you want to place the door on the front side, you need to position the front heaters slightly off-center when the cabin width is 130 cm, or—depending on the available space—make the cabin wider.

Mark the floor area using adhesive tape.

Seat height

The typical seat height is around 45 cm. However, since you are building your infrared cabin individually, you can adjust the height to your personal needs and set it lower or higher. Use chairs or stools for testing.

Arrangement of infrared heaters

Back heaters in seated cabins

Make sure to position the back heater directly behind the spine. If you want to install two or more seats, ensure there is sufficient spacing. If space becomes too limited, it is better to remove one seat. It is always better to have more freedom of movement than too little.

Define the installation height of your infrared heater. The infrared radiation should ideally start directly at the level of the bench. Many infrared heaters have a “dark” area at the bottom where the wiring is located. If necessary, install the heater slightly lower than the top edge of the seating bench.

Fron heaters in seat cabins

The front heater should ideally be positioned directly in front of the body. It is installed lower than the back heater and provides heat to the legs and upper body from the front. As a guideline, it should be placed about 10 cm above the floor (please refer to the installation instructions).

If a frontal arrangement is not possible, it can be positioned slightly offset. Installation in a corner is also possible, although the heat radiation will then be distributed less evenly across the body.

In single-person cabins, one front heater can also be installed on both the left and right sides in the corners.

Here you can see practical examples and which infrared heaters and control systems you need for them. Suitable sets can be found in our online shop, but you are also welcome to contact us directly.
A comfortable addition is backrests, or color light for atmospheric lighting.

Infrared cabin with 1 seat

For this small infrared cabin with one seat and a side door, you can position the infrared heaters directly opposite each other. You therefore need:

1x InfraROTmed 500W back heater
1x InfraROTmed 750W front heater
1x control unit icon 2 Touch or icon 4 Touch

Infrared cabin with 1 seat and front door

In this small infrared cabin with one seat, the infrared heaters cannot be positioned directly opposite each other because the door is located there. Therefore, two front heaters are installed. You therefore need:

1x InfraROTmed 500W back heater
2x InfraROTmed 750W front heater
1x control unit icon 4 Touch

Infrared cabin with 2 seats

In infrared cabins with two seats, there is usually enough space to position the infrared heaters directly opposite each other. You therefore need:

2x InfraROTmed 500W back heater
2x InfraROTmed 750W front heater
1x control unit icon 4 Touch

In our online shop you will find plug-and-play sets for most projects. We are also happy to put together a customized set for your desired cabin.
